Are you familiar with the phrase “keep your eye on the ball?” Well, with this technology, all you have to do is substitute phone/ computer/etc. for eye. And you’d better keep your eye on it…because that’s exactly how it works!
The first ipod was released in October of 2001; and since then has given way to ipads and a host of extraordinary phones and phone devices that use this once-novel touch-screen technology.
Now, just a little more than 10 years later, a new way of using these devices may make the touch screen look like yesterday’s news.
With “Gaze,” by which the viewer’s eyes reiterate the motion and movement of a mouse, Tobii Technology is looking to revolutionize how we compute as fundamentally (if not more so) as/than did Apple with its iPad. The company demonstrated how Gaze works at the 2012 Consumer Electronic Show (CES) with arcade games and a photo arcade. The former let players play just by using their eyes and the latter let photo arcade viewers select/present different photos the same way.
And what about someone who just wants an easier way to read his favorite novel onscreen?
It’s simple. Just scroll through the text – both up and down – with your eyes!
This Swedish company was founded in 2001 by (current ceo) John Elvesjo, Henrik Eskilsson and Marten Skogo. It now has branches all over the world – including China, Norway, and the USA. Its expertise in its chosen field has put it on a fast track to success; allowing it to quite possibly become the leading vendor of eye tracking and eye control in such areas/institutions as hospitals, diagnostics, gaming/computer manufacturing, and vehicle safety.
Evidently, there’s still homework to be done. Though they’ve given this amazing invention a thumbs up, critics say there is one bug that still needs to be worked out – namely the fact that “If you accidentally look off to the side or at somewhere random on the page, you would navigate to somewhere you did not intend.”
So where does that leave the makers of (if you’ll pardon the pun) this eye-catching new technology ? Tobii Technology’s current target is nothing short of the adoption of Gaze by Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system!.
